Abstract

The “generation of Amílcar Cabral” was deeply concerned with the theoretical question of the correct identification of the enemy during the armed struggle for national liberation in Angola, Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique, as well as recognition of the unity of the struggle against Portuguese colonialism. Within the liberation movements, this concern extended into politico-military training programmes as well as mass education in the liberated zones. A major contribution to the debate was the three-volume collection of primary texts edited by Aquino de Bragança and Immanuel Wallerstein and published in Portuguese in 1978. Aquino, although he never accepted any political or diplomatic appointments in Mozambique, had been an important figure in collaborative initiatives from the 1950s onwards, and played important but low-key roles in several moments both before and after independence. However, the sophistication of analysis dropped sharply after independence, with the disappearance of the primary enemy, and the issue has largely disappeared from modern political discourse.
