Abstract

Erasmus of Rotterdam and Thomas More stood out as two of the greatest exponents of Renaissance humanism, offering perspectives that transcend their time and remain deeply relevant in contemporary education. This article analyzes their pedagogical conceptions, highlighting the views of Erasmus, expressed in The Education of a Christian Prince, and of More, summarized in Utopia. By exploring the influences of these thinkers on the development of ideas such as ethical training, equality, and universal access to education, this study reflects on the impact of their proposals in the Portuguese and global educational context.  In Portugal, principles such as the democratization of education and inclusion directly reflect More's ideals, while the emphasis on critical thinking and interdisciplinarity, advocated by Erasmus, is echoed in modern curricula. Globally, their ideas have influenced literacy and digital inclusion movements in regions such as Latin America and Africa, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Finally, their ideas are compared with non-humanistic pedagogies, highlighting the contrasts in terms of objectives and methods, and their impact on contemporary challenges is discussed.
